Welcome to the website of the Pannasiha, Lion of Wisdom Meditation Center. This rural meditation retreat facility is a branch of the Washington Buddhist Vihara. It is the fulfillment of the long held dream of Bhante Maharagama Dhammasiri to honor his beloved teacher, the late Ven. Madihe Pannasiha Mahanayaka Thera. Lion of wisdom is the translation of the pali word pannasiha. Panna means wisdom and siha is a lion. The lion is the fearless king of animals, while Wisdom is the fearless king of the mind. It is the purpose of this center to be a refuge from the hustle and bustle of city life and provide access to the slower nature vibrations of the rural countryside conducive to mindfulness meditation practice. There has long been a need for a meditation retreat center not too far from the tri-state metropolitan areas of Washington, Maryland and Northern Virginia.
The director and principle teacher of this center is the well known Bhante Yogavacara Rahula, an American born Buddhist monk. Starting next April he will be offering three lengths of mindfulness meditation retreats to serve the individual needs and time constraints.
A ‘Day of Mindfulness’, 9 am-5 pm on Saturdays
A weekend retreat starting on Saturday 1 pm ending on Sunday 5 pm
A weekend retreat starting on Friday 7 pm ending on Sunday 5 pm.
These retreats will consist of guided instructions in the practice of body centered mindfulness and vipassana meditation and will incorporate some yoga breathing and stretching exercises to help facilitate a mindful connection to present moment awareness.
The main house will have a large meditation hall on the ground floor. The middle floor will have two dormitory rooms for men; the upper floor will have two dormitory rooms for women. In the future we hope to have a block of individual kutis ‘meditation cells’ for persons wanting to make a longer term personal retreat.
People coming to this center for retreats will observe the eight precepts including the training of not eating solid food after the noon meal.
The retreat facility is still much a work in progress to make it suitable for housing retreatants. It will not be fully functioning until next April. Until then we encourage donations in both cash and skills, volunteering to come to the center from time to time to help in ongoing work such as building remodeling, grounds/ garden to help this most worthwhile project. Please keep checking this website for updates and announcements.
May all beings be well, peaceful and wise!
